We read that bit ear tips or tufts are there to help us discern tiny changes in air current, that helps alert us to things moving. A bit like our whiskers pick up air movement. They definately give you the style advantage.

Whicky WuudlerEverycathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15356564928470972448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3757677785914623444.post-68278473264760269542009-07-02T07:37:27.820-04:002009-07-02T07:37:27.820-04:00you haf great ears!you haf great ears! The Meezers or Billyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05035027094894711341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3757677785914623444.post-55294207312167344272009-07-02T06:56:13.420-04:002009-07-02T06:56:13.420-04:00Dante, we love your tufts! If they are in fact hybrid it would be many many generations back. Maine Coon breeders completely reject that they are a hybridized breed. Friends of ours who have traveled up there and seen some of the native "barn cats" enormous enough to stand and bend over to drink out of a rain barrel...

I think though that the tips on the cats ears are achieved through breeders selecting cats who have tips and selectively breeding them to cats who have larger ears with tips! I think the tips are charming... The huge muled ears would not occur in nature to animals who have to endure cold climates... which again is achieved by breeders selecting larger eared cats to breed. Large ears are nature's temperature control device to diffuse high temperatures- as in the desert hare or the desert fox... Cold weather creatures keep their ears closer to their heads so that they don't become frostbitten... the arctic hare and fox... Abyssinian Cats- who would have been a desert animal and the Serval- who had the largest ears in the feline family.

Dante is a most fabulous cat with extreme type. Everything about him full-tilt extreme. A most excellent example of selective breeding!8GR8LOLCATShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04697089264712635820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3757677785914623444.post-41803734912419326382009-07-01T22:05:01.291-04:002009-07-01T22:05:01.291-04:00Dante has lovely tips!Dante has lovely tips!Angel, Kirby and Maxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17142914249981749713noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3757677785914623444.post-18248608951664874422009-07-01T21:44:53.446-04:002009-07-01T21:44:53.446-04:00Your ears are darling!!Your ears are darling!!Quill and Greysonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14625138189901613239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3757677785914623444.post-73145786024382098722009-07-01T20:23:26.400-04:002009-07-01T20:23:26.400-04:00Gemini is not maine coon but she does have ear tuf...Gemini is not maine coon but she does have ear tufts--but not so nice as yours Dante!Gemini and Ichirohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01102088688833145254noreply@blogger.com
