TAILS TUESDAY: DANTE'S ENCOUNTER

It was a windy day when our neighbour stopped by with her woofie, Rascal, to say hello.  This isn't Dante's first encounter with Rascal, so he recognizes him as a friend and trots right over to see him.  Dante's tail is like a flag being whipped by the wind.

Unfortunately, this time Rascal wasn't as amenable and let out a loud bark.  Dante just stopped and reversed his course, and slowly and calmly retreated.  He was a little sad that Rascal was feeling so irritable today, but took it in stride, as he always does.  No hackles were raised, but Dante's tail shows he is as confident as ever.

Rascal's mama thought he was being aggressive, but after recounting the story to some woofie-loving friends of mine, they said that Rascal's stance showed that he just wanted to play.  Rascal's head and front legs are bowed down.

Do any of you out there know what Rascal is really telling us?

We don't know what Rascal was saying, but we're certainly impressed that Dante remained calm and unruffled!

The neighbour who has the townhouse adjacent to ours has a young dog, large breed. She doesn't get the exercise she needs and as a consequence, is very barky. (Seriously, this poor dog is confined all day and as far as I can tell is never taken out to walk on leash, let alone run off-leash.) Nicki will sit in the corner on our side of the fence and hiss and lunge at her on the other side, thus further inciting her. So I don't think our Nicki would have been calm and collected with Rascal!!!!

Awww, poor Dante, just wanted to say hello. We think that Rascal wanted to give Dante a good whiffing.

I think Rascal was giving Dante an exuberant HELLO in his outdoor voice ;)

Well, his ears are up, which is a good sign. He was most likely excited and saw Dante as a potential playmate, since they are almost the same size.

Dante is a real gentleman; too bad he didn't get the play vibe from Rascal!...Rascal does look like he wants to play, but his human should know his personality for sure...We are never around woofies so we would probably hiss and get really big tails!!...xo...Calle, Halle, Sukki

We agree, the woofie looks like he wants to play. The thing is with big woofies is they sometimes don't understand their playmate isn't a woofie and can either get hurt easier or hurt them easily! Always better to be safe than sorry.

Wow Dante, it is so admirable of you to take it all in your stride! Woofies are so excitable, we have one living next door who keeps barking at us from across the fence. Looks like Rascal wants to play, but dogs sure are loud aren't they?!

I think Rascal is saying: HOLY Dog-Doodies... that is one ginormous cat!!! I love any cat who stands his/her ground with a dog! Puff- when she was an outside girl used to chase dogs out of HER yard!!!

We don't know much about doggie body language - we would have done the same as Dante, though probably in a much less calm way!
